Marriage & Family Therapy

What to expect from therapy. “Will I be lying on a couch or what?!”:

The choice to begin therapy can be a difficult one, and one that can leave you with some butterflies upon approaching your first session. We understand this, and want you to feel free asking us whatever you need to in order to make you most comfortable in beginning the therapy process. Some of our clients are familiar with therapy and what transpires behind the closed door, but others are not. We want to de-mystify some of it for you to help ward off some of those butterflies.

Therapy is a confidential conversation had between the therapist and client(s). Often times, it may be considered between client and therapist to bring in additional family members in order to better understand and work through the often complex problems that we find ourselves experiencing. However, this is not always necessary, and is something that will be discussed and mutually agreed upon between the therapist and client if needed.

Upon approaching your first session, it is often useful to identify some of your goals you would like to achieve through the therapy process so that you can discuss these with your therapist. Therapy is a trusted bond that is created between you and your therapist that will ideally provide you with a place where you feel most free to discuss your feelings, hopes, goals, thoughts, and worries. Ultimately, therapy is a place where you feel the most free to change the things in your life that have been holding you back. You will not be lying on a couch (unless you want to)!

Whether you are still trying to make this big decision, or if you are closing in on your first session, we want to take some time to answer some of the questions you may have:
